6-25-2003 Notes on Jaguar Stub Axle Rebuild 1. I did not need a hub puller to removed the hub 2. The nut holding the hub to the axle was tough. I used a 3/4" drive socket and breaker bar. 3. The bolts holding the axle to the brake disk were easy. I used a universal drive socket. 4. The rearmost shock has to be removed to give clearance to remove the stub axle. 5. The U Joint replacement was tricky- Remove the retaining rings with screwdriver/needlenose New U joints come with retaining rings Drive the bearing from one end pushing the bearing out of the other end as far as you can. Drive the bearing only on the same side back with a punch until you have clearance to remove the us joint. Use wd40. Drive the other bearing out with a punch. Position the ujoint back in the housing without the bearings on the end. CAREFUL NOT TO DISTURB THE NEEDLES IN THE BEARINGS THROUGHOUT REASSEMBLY. Use oil on surfaces to ease bearing replacement. Position the bearing on the ujoint. This will hold the needles in place. Drive the bearing in holding the ujoint onto the bearing as you drive. Drive the bearing in until you can position the bearing on the other side so needles are held in place. Drive it in. Put a retaining ring on the other side. Drive until it bottoms and you can put the remaining retaining ring into place. If the bearing bottoms out and you have no room to put the retaining ring in then you may have allowed a needle to come out of position inside the bearing. take it apart and try again. Ujoints are a common type and are available at NAPA. 6. Put a 45 degree grease fitting on the outer u joint so you can get a regular grease gun in there.
