I hope all of you are dusting off your Jags and getting them ready to enjoy the spring and summer seasons. I know I’m spending a lot of time tinkering with my cars, and I’d like to pass along a little update on my projects. ’88 XJSC-’97 LT1/6Speed Conversion Well the big news here I suppose is that it runs. Actually, I finished the last few things needed to at least start the car (fuel lines, final wiring, spark plugs and wires, and basic emissions hookups) about 2 weeks ago, and then with fingers crossed I turned the key and it started right up. Well wasn’t this nervous father surprised? The engine ran smoothly, and settled into a nice even 600rpm idle almost immediately. Since the cooling system wasn’t hooked up yet, I quickly ran around town to get all new hoses, and soon that was finished too. Now I could run it for more than a minute and I have to say it’s great. Everything works fine- fans come on as they should, clutch works properly, no check engine light, and I’m really happy with it so far. There’s been no first drive yet as I still have the exhaust to do. In that department, my plan is to run twin pipes (with twin cats, taken from a 2002 Camaro LS1) under the diff, then splitting to each side with a muffler in each for the former resonator locations (this is a ‘97 engine, and as a result has OnBoard II electronics- I can only run OE cat converters to be legal in California, at least so far). If any XJS or XJ6 owner reading this has a “under the diff” style exhaust on his (or her) car, please Email me back as I’d like to know how it worked out, what style mufflers you used, etc.,. The interior of the XJSC appears virtually untouched aside from an extra pedal and the different shifter in the console. The shifter position falls nicely to hand. Next tasks in line to finish are air cleaner installation, AC hook up (I’m running an GM factory AC-delete idler/pulley for the moment) and reprogramming the PCM for lower fan pull-in temperatures (the factory settings are 221 Deg for low speed and 229 for high speed- both temps far too high in my opinion for aluminum heads). Attached are a couple of photos-one the nearly completed engine compartment and another of the interior with new shifter visible (the ski slope there is just a mock up- not the final version). If you’re new to my mailing list, please do check out the 3 previous detailed installments of this project already on the “Project Car” page of my website: www.JaguarSpecialties.com (http://www.jaguarspecialties.com/) 88-94 XJ6/XJ40 V8 Conversion For those of you not familiar with these cars, the 88-94 sedans never really took too well to the V8 conversion thing, and as a result, no kits are commercially available. Well, I came into a mule car (a donated 92 XJ6) for nearly nothing some months ago, and wanted to try the fit. The results were very encouraging, and to go forward, I was given a complete 88 XJ6 with blown engine on which to actually do a V8 conversion and produce a driving car. This car is getting the full ’88 305 TPI/700R4 treatment, and I have to say it’s coming along nicely. The engine and transmission mounts were very basic, the stock shifter works fine with the T700R4 trans, and the serpentine accessory drive puts all the pieces in the right places. These cars already have a 3.54 rearend gear, so the T700R4 is a natural choice. The TPI fits nicely under the hood; carbureted engines would be ok as well, and of course an LT1 would be no problem. The TPI wiring so far has been a real snap- the Camaro harness closely mirrors the original Jag injection wiring which was also basically a stand-alone unit from the remainder of the car. I’ll probably have this car running in a few weeks, so I should have more info then on the package as a whole. Although this sort of swap will be somewhat more complicated than other Jag swaps, I see no major show-stopper for offering a kit. I’m following the same philisophy as my other Jag conversions- use as many off the shelf parts as possible to keep costs down, reliability up, and make the results easy to duplicate for any end user. Attached are a few photos of the install in progress for you to check out. I’ll post a more in-depth look at this project in the next website update. Neat New Parts And while we’re talking about LT1’s….. I now have several of the factory 1LE LT1 hipo intake elbows in stock for sale. This GM performance part is a replacement for the factory intake elbow (turns left from the throttle body, just like the original), but eliminates the noise silencer installed from the factory (hanging down on Camaro/Firebird or mounted above the manifold on Caprice/Impala). It seemed like a good mod, so I put one on my XJSC. I’ve read on several sites that this duct is good for 5-10 added HP, depending on application. Email me for more info. Thanks for reading this, and if you have any questions of comments, by all means Email me back, or call. And if I can be of any help with your Jaguar project(s), please do let me know. If the car still has the stock Jag engine in it, you will need to drop the front of the subframe a few inches to get it in. If you do it this way, just be conscious of the mechanical cooling fan not contacting the shroud and damaging either. Be sure the rear subframe mounts (the nut on each one) are loose so the frame can tilt some without over streesing the mounts themselves. If the car has a V8 conversion, the old sway bar can be removed and the new one installed by snaking them out the side (once the car is up in the air with the wheels off). The V8's sit back further in the car giving more clearance for this "snaking operation" in front. I hope this makes sense- let me know if I can clarify further. Find source of ends out and remedy. Problem: Style changes to long runner changes causing selvage ends out poorly repaired and collars cut too deep by trainees. Operators not completely repairing before leaving machine. Chain of poor work. Held training session for operators who may be lacking in proper skills. All operators certified to 'cut collars'. On each shift assigned workers to each of the problem selvages for the duration of the shift or until it was fixed. Checked progress and noted at end of each shift. 12/29/2003 B Shift #35 Problem with cut too deep slv on right side. Assigned Christie to it. Taped ends to slv and was able to let it build up and get about 5 ends put back in right by end of shift. #20 Cut too deep on left side. Buffy assigned to it. Taped ends to beam and let it build up. By end of shift first end was starting to drag. #17 Twists and tangles in 2 spots on beam 1. Little work was done. #12 1" wide collar on top. Reduced collar to about1/4" but it might not be a collar. 12/30/2003 A Shift Reviewed status with Ricky and Val. Advised them to assign 1 person to each machine and leave #17 for last. Flat surface running against eyes etc causes twists to back up and eventually knot up if the tension is too high. Don't jog too much. Just run it.
