Notes on debate in aftermath of elementary school killings in Newtown, CT 12/14/2012 1. It seems apparent that the NRA is prepared to fight any modification to the current set of gun control laws. Arguments are used such as "guns don't kill people, people kill people"; "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun". It seems that their position is not that guns should be harder to get but that they should be easier to get for law abiding citizens. 2. The NRA does not address simple loopholes in the law which allow people to purchase guns without backround checks online and at gun shows. Presumably, they oppose closing these loopholes. 3. It seems that the reactionary response to the incident is to target the sale and/or proliferation of guns. There does not seem to be any response to the argument that when a law abiding population is generally "armed", it becomes more difficult for the government, invaders or fellow citizans to victimize them. Proposed Agreement: 1. Law abiding, competent people should be free to buy and own guns and ammunition and; 2. Non law abiding, incompetent people should be prevented from buying guns and ammunitions 3. The goverment is the only authority that should discern the difference and enforce the control.
