Notwithstanding Terry's comment, peoples' capicity to "fight" against a despotic government should not be confused with their ability to "defeat" that goverment. In that distinction lies an argument that must be addressed. Having seen and read some of the pro-gun email propaganda that is ricocheting around the internet, I can only conclude that the pro-gun crowd is almost completely devoid of critical thinking or analytic thought. Facts are misstated, conclusions don't follow, spelling is wrong, words are left out, and the straw man is ubiquitous. These are emails that have been read by countless people (or maybe not) and forwarded to others rather than deleted. Emotion rather than reason is at work. If these emails represent the mainstream of thought on pro-gun advocacy, I can tell you that the purveyors are anti-Obama and anti-goverment. This is a dangerous combination of firepower and political extremism. These are disgruntled Americans. These are the same self-proclaimed "law abiding citizens" who own guns and are preparing to form a militia to fight a despotic goverment. The problem is that if they can't even apply critical thinking to obvious email propaganda, can we trust them to decide if the goverment is despotic and needs to be fought? And who will be telling them when it's time to fight and who to fight? If they are that easily manipulated by propaganda, and their judgement is that bad, they shouldn't own guns to begin with.
