This is a follow up to an article "The Fundamental Difference" whose thesis is that the fundamental difference between today's Republican Conservatives and Liberal Democrats is that the former are unable to empathize. They simply lack the capacity to put themselves in anothers' shoes. You can see this fundamental difference again and again as you watch conservative politicians and pundits tackle issues. For example, Fox News had a piece where the conservative pundit was suggesting that racial profiling was acceptable for security reasons in fighting terrorism. This notion is so flawed on so many levels that it requires little scrutiny. The point is that the pundit was absolutely unable to evoke in himself that feeling of being singled out and treated poorly because of race. He said that he would not mind being searched even if he was singled out because of race because he had nothing to hide and he understood the need for security. Clearly, he had never been singled out because of race. If he had, he would realize that the feeling of unfair treatment is overwhelming. Maybe not for a single search but after repeated searches it surely would follow. What about the feeling of missing your plane or appointment because of it? Or the feeling of being treated like a criminal in front of your wife, family, society, or fellow business travellers? But, the pundit said, he did have a problem with them searching 90 year old grandmothers. Aha! He looks at a 90 year old woman and THINKS of his grandmother. Suddenly his opinion changes because he KNOWS his grandmother. She is familiar to him. HE CAN EMPATHIZE WITH HER. She is LIKE him. Otherwise, he doesn't get it. He doesn't even understand that there are people (liberals) who can't stand the sight of someone being treated unfairly even if its not themselves. This is the key to countering conservative philosophy. Ask the conservative the straight forward question; Can you conceive of what it may be like to be "different" from you and to be treated differently because of your race? Can you imagine what it is like to be that person on death row? Can you feel the inner turmoil and conflict of a woman with an unwanted child in her womb? Do you think the opinions of people that vary from your own are worth addressing?
